Looking Back/Moving Forward: Vermont Stories of LGBTQ+ Caregiving & Community
This program shines a light on three couples in Vermont history as models of resilience and civic engagement. Their legacies inspire ways to envision LGBTQ+ aging and caregiving in the future. The primary focus of this lively presentation is on Warren Kronemeyer and Leon Ingall (Townshend, Windham County, 1980-2002). As the creator of the Warlé project, Andrew Ingall uses genealogical research, archival documents, photography, artifacts, oral history, movement, and creative nonfiction to “re-member” his ancestors. Although he never met them during their lifetimes, Andrew’s story conjures Warren and Leon’s spirit and honors their legacy. How do their struggles and successes compare with two other notable couples in Vermont history?: Charity Bryant and Sylvia Drake of Weybridge, whose relationship was considered a marriage in the 19th century; and Thom Herman and Jeremy Youst, who owned and operated the Andrews Inn in Bellows Falls from 1979 to 1984, a renowned LGBTQ+ gathering place in the Northeastern United States. The event, consisting of a performative talk with slides, a discussion, Q&A, a participatory exercise, and reception, will take place at Rockingham Free Public Library in Bellows Falls, followed by a reception and dance party at Ciao Popolo restaurant on the former site of the Andrews Inn.
